AUBURN – To run the Auburn Christmas light and sound show on Vista Drive, Karen and Jamie Loggins have strung about 130,000 lights, have more than 330 separate electric controls and outlets.

They buy spools of cable and make their own extension cords.

They make their own displays. The stars on their roof – made from steel rods – would cost hundreds of dollars to buy, Jamie Loggins said. “You save money by doing your own electronics. You just risk getting shocked every now and then,” he joked.

They have a 120 amp sub-panel dedicated to their exterior lights, another for their home. They’ve had power taps installed in their yard.

To transmit music to visiting vehicles, they’ve built a small radio tower on their property. Loggins uses a computer program to choreograph the lights to music.

He estimates he’s spent thousands for the show, but has no idea of the total cost. The show is easy on his electric bill, he insists, because only a fraction of the lights are on at any time.

As planned the show will be open for public viewing from now until New Year’s, starting at 5:30 p.m. and going until 8 p.m. on week nights, 10 p.m. on weekends.
