Jordan Kennedy’s homecoming isn’t going to be a fond memory.

The 16-year-old Lewiston goaltender, who grew up playing hockey at Centre 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, allowed five goals at that rink Thursday — including one to former Maineiacs skater Marc Bourgeois — as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles outgunned Lewiston 5-2, sending the Maineiacs to their 11th consecutive defeat.

“Their top players were clearly their top players; they were dominant,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “Our top players weren’t our best players. It was another difficult and disappointing night to say the least.”

Kennedy finished with 36 saves on 41 shots in his fourth start of the season. He has yet to win a game, and has allowed more than five goals per game on average. Thursday’s setback, though, was far from his fault alone.

“He was a bit out of position on their power play goal, and he had one go through his legs on one of them, but he made some really good stops at certain points to keep us in the game,” MacAdam said.

Offensively, the Maineiacs are also in a funk. Lewiston has scored just four goals in its three previous games, and the team’s power play has been outscored 1-0 in the two games on the current four-game road swing.

“The guys who were scoring before, the guys we count on to score goals, they’re not scoring right now,” MacAdam said.

The Maineiacs juggled their lineup a bit in the first pair of games on the road this week, using call-ups Luke Dillman (forward) and Stephen Woodworth (defense) for the game in Moncton on Tuesday. Woodworth remained in the lineup for MacAdam’s squad Thursday, while Stefan Fournier and Sebastien Trudeau found their way back into the lineup.

“Stephen Woodworth is playing very well for us right now,” MacAdam said. “He’ll finish out the road trip and then he has school commitments and the Under-17 tournament, but he’s a player we wouldn’t mind having back here at some point.”

The lineup juggling didn’t help, though. Cape Breton got its first goal from sniper Nick MacNeil, who netted his 19th of the season on the power play midway through the first frame. The Screaming Eagles tacked on two more early in the second to put the home team on top 3-0.

Marco Desveaux got the Maineiacs on the board just shy of the 10-minute mark of the second period when he tipped in a shot by Mathieu Gingras, but Bourgeois’ fourth of the season reestablished the Eagles’ three-goal edge.

The teams traded goals in the third period, with Francis Beauvillier earning his seventh of the season in the exchange.

After a day off, the Maineiacs will square off Saturday with the Halifax Mooseheads, who sit last in the league in wins and points, and then play in Saint John against the Sea Dogs, the league’s top team, on Sunday afternoon.
