LEWISTON – Voters returned veteran School Committee member Larry Lachance to another two-year term Tuesday.

Lachance defeated Paul St. Pierre 703-437 in the city’s Ward 2 School Committee race.

Lachance, a semiretired driver for United Wheelchair, has served three terms on the School Committee. He believes the biggest challenge to the school system is the No Child Left Behind law.

“We have to press with our congressional delegation to somehow overcome this (not making) adequate yearly progress with our growing English language learners population in our schools,” he said in a pre-election interview. “There needs to be a way of adjusting this for this population and still show yearly progress. Labeling an entire school as not making progress is unfair.”

Lachance is chairman of Catholic Charity’s SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage and Hope) Advisory Board and a member of Holy Family Church.

St. Pierre, an information technology administrator, has served six terms on the School Committee.
