LEWISTON – A fire that damaged a couple’s 9 Boston Ave. home on Halloween eve was probably caused by a wood furnace, fire Captain Victor Gaudreau said Wednesday.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said, “but it’s pretty (evident) that the fire originated in the wood furnace.”

The occupants, whose names Gaudreau did not release Wednesday, were not injured, he said. The call came into the department around 5:24 p.m., and the blaze initially looked big, with lots of smoke when firefighters arrived at the scene, he said. “The fire was pretty much extinguished shortly after our arrival,” Gaudreau said.

The extent of the damage wasn’t immediately known, he said. “But from what I can see, as far as the amount of fire and the amount of smoke, I’d say there was quite a bit of fire damage to the basement.”

Some upper-floor windows had to be broken to ventilate the house, Gaudreau added.

Three Lewiston Fire Department pumpers, a Quint and a ladder truck responded, along with a team on standby from the Auburn department, he said.
