AUBURN – A fire in a four-story apartment building at 369 Main St. early Thursday morning reportedly left 14 people homeless.
Initial indications are that no one was seriously hurt in the fire, which broke out around 3:30 a.m.
According to a source at the scene, a man sleeping in an apartment on the fourth floor was awakened by a woman talking on a cell phone in her car in front of the building. The woman was saying the building was on fire and that she didn’t believe the occupants knew about the fire.
According to the source, the man quickly began waking up other occupants.
Fire fighters reportedly had difficulty fighting the blaze in part because of close power lines and because the land behind the building drops off quickly, leaving no access from that direction.
Power was cut to homes and businesses in the area for about four hours.
As of about 9 a.m. traffic was being diverted around the apartment building, but the street was open.
