AUBURN – Police and flaggers will be on hand Monday as crews begin building a new roundabout traffic control on Turner Street between Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
The work should continue for the next two weeks, according to Maureen Aube, city community business specialist.
The roundabout should be in service by Labor Day.
“If the weather holds, that’s what we’re hoping for,” Aube said. “But you can never be sure with Mother Nature when it comes to projects like this.”
Crews should begin building the circular structure at the center of the intersection Monday. When it’s finished, they’ll remove the traffic lights and erect signs directing mall area traffic through the roundabout. The traffic lights will stay up in the meantime. They’ll be used at night and on weekends.
Roundabouts are smaller than rotaries and require traffic entering the circle to yield to the cars that are already there. The small size is designed to slow cars to about 15-20 miles-per-hour, letting them proceed through without coming to a complete stop. There’s only one lane through the circle.
A second roundabout is being built near the Auburn Mall and Lamey-Wellehan.
