AUBURN – A man was seriously injured Monday night when his motorcycle slammed into a deer on Minot Avenue.

Christopher Cameron, 32, whose address was not immediately available, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what were described as multiple injuries, police said. He was listed in stable condition early this morning.

A witness said Cameron was not moving and appeared unconscious moments after the 9 p.m. collision. He landed next to the Honda 750 in the eastbound lane near 1309 Minot Ave.

“I ran down there and he was laying in the road. There was no one around,” said Shirley O’Brien, who lives across from the scene. “He was just covered in blood. I called 911 and told them, ‘you better get someone out here fast.'”

When emergency crews arrived, at least one passing motorist had stopped to assist Cameron, who was not wearing a helmet. The deer, killed in the impact, lay near the center of the road.

Though Cameron landed in the east-bound lane, it was not immediately clear in which direction he had been traveling when the deer ran in front of him.

O’Brien said her husband heard what he described as a ‘thump’ when the motorcycle struck the animal.

Police blocked traffic to all but two lanes around the crash site as they began taking measurements and photographs as part of their investigation.

O’Brien said deer occasionally cross back and forth across the highway. She also said traffic typically moves fast in both directions on the stretch of Minot Avenue in front of her home. “I’ve seen a lot of accidents out here,” she said.
