LISBON – In a special meeting Monday night, officials voted to have polls only at the town office building for the June 12 state election to save money.

Since there is only one paper ballot provided by the Secretary of State’s office, all ballots will have to be hand counted, Town Clerk Twila Lycette said, so it was decided to open one polling place to save money. She plans to hire 40 vote counters.

Normally, towns must make polling location changes 90 days before an election. However, an emergency bill approved by the Legislature on May 3 dropped it to 35 days. The town only learned of the change Friday afternoon, which meant they had to make the change no later than Monday.

Usually, a public hearing would be held at least seven days before making the change. Councilors will hold an after-the-fact public hearing May 15 to explain the new procedure and hear comments, Lycette said.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are available at the town office.

The town’s usual polling stations in Lisbon and Lisbon Falls will be closed.
