LEWISTON – A man who drove the wrong way up a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge ramp Wednesday night remained hospitalized Friday in serious condition.
Police said 37-year-old Mark Maxheimer of Auburn broke bones and suffered other injuries when his vehicle slammed head-on into a second vehicle at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators said Maxheimer had turned onto the off ramp on Main Street and drove nearly all the way to the bridge before slamming into a Toyota Celica.
A couple riding in that car were taken to Central Maine Medical Center where they were treated and released.
On Friday, Maxheimer remained at the hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash and said charges are expected.
