TURNER – Four candidates are vying for two seats on the Board of Selectmen in Friday’s election. All other races are uncontested.

Incumbent Selectman Henry Gibbert and board Chairman Dennis Richardson are being challenged by Paul Bernard, a chaplain for the American Legion, and Angelo Terreri, president of the Turner Athletic Association.

The polls will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Town Office. The annual town meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Leavitt Area High School cafeteria.

The proposed town budget is about $2.7 million, but that does not include the $408,000 county budget or the school budget, which will be determined in June.

An increase in the tax rate is projected, according to Town Clerk Eva Leavitt. The exact amount will be determined following the town’s spring assessment and the completion of the school budget.

One of the biggest items on Saturday’s agenda will be funding for the Town Office building project. Two articles on the town warrant address the difference of opinion between the Town Office Building Committee and the Budget Committee and selectmen.

The building committee supports spending no more than $748,849 for the construction project. Selectmen and Budget Committee members support spending no more than $575,000.

All three boards support taking $150,000 from the town’s surplus and transferring $50,000 from the Boofy Quimby Memorial Center Addition Reserve Account.

An additional article asks for the transfer of the remaining balance of the Quimby center addition reserve account, estimated at $31,500, to the building reserve account.
