TURNER – A five-year-old home on the grounds of the Turner Highlands Country Club was destroyed Monday in a blaze that took firefighters more than six hours to fight.

The woman who lives at the 85 Highland Ave. house discovered the fire after returning home with her kids about 2:30 p.m., fire Chief Michael Arsenault said.

No one was inside the house, and nobody was hurt. The name of the family that lived in the home was not immediately available Monday night.

Fire crews from a half dozen towns arrived on the grounds minutes after the fire was reported and found the sprawling, two-story home fully engulfed.

Within an hour, flames had gutted the front of the house. A short time later, it was burned almost flat and flames had spread to the attached garage in the back.

Fire crews remained at the scene into the night, dousing hot spots that continued to flare up within the rubble.

It was 9 p.m. before the last of the Turner fire crews left the scene. Arsenault said there was no immediate indication as to the cause of the blaze. Fire officials expect to begin investigating the source on Tuesday, he said.

The house was near Appleseed Drive in the development portion of the golf course. Highland Avenue runs between Appleseed and North Parish Road, Route 117.

The golf course has been at its present location since 1993. More homes have appeared along the grounds since.

“They’re all fairly new homes up there,” Arsenault said.

The value of the house that burned Monday had not been determined.
