AUBURN – An 18-year-old man was arrested on a drug charge Monday afternoon after police said they found marijuana and an assault rifle inside his Poliquin Avenue home.

Glenn Barry, of 75 Poliquin Ave., was charged with aggravated furnishing marijuana. Police said they found nearly a pound of marijuana inside his house.

The charge is considered aggravated because Barry was said to be in possession of a weapon while committing a drug crime.

“An AK-47-style assault rifle was located in the house when it was searched,” deputy police Chief Jason Moen said. “Ammunition was found with the weapon.”

At the time of his arrest, Barry was on probation for juvenile crimes, Moen said. As part of his probation, he was subject to random searches.

Early Monday afternoon, police and Barry’s probation officer went over to search the house. That’s when they found three-quarters of a pound of marijuana, Moen said. The rifle was found a short time later.

“We’re still researching where the weapon came from,” Moen said.

The assault rifle is a semiautomatic. Police said they are seeing more and more assault-style weapons in relation to local drug trafficking.

“They are not uncommon,” Moen said. “We’ve seen them in the past.”

Barry was booked into the Androscoggin County Jail at 2 p.m. and was being held on $5,000 cash bail. However, because he was also being held on a juvenile probation hold, Barry would be moved to the Long Creek Youth Center in South Portland should he make bail at the county jail.
