Board: Mechanic Falls Council

Met: Monday night

Road posting

Issue: Heavy trucks and equipment damage roads during time of seasonal change with warm days and refreezing nights.

The scoop: The council authorized posting town roads to heavy trucks and equipment from March 9 to April 30. During this time, people wishing to run heavy equipment on town roads must contact John Hawley at the town office for permits he may issue if conditions allow access onto roads.

Truck bid

Issue:
It is time to replace one of the Water Department pickup trucks.

The scoop: The council accepted O’Connor Motors’ bid to provide a 2007 GMC for $10,084 plus the department’s four-year-old pickup in trade.

Liquor license

Issue:
Restaurants and bars must secure liquor licenses and amusement permits annually.

The scoop: The council approved new liquor and victualer’s licenses and video and amusement permits for Lefty’s Tavern at 6 North Main St., site of the former Mason Jar. The tavern will be allowed karaoke, two- or three-piece live entertainment, a juke box and pool table.

Tree removal

Issue:
Responsibility for trimming, pruning or removal of trees in the public right of way.

The scoop: The council passed a resolution that taxpayer funds shall no longer be used for the maintenance of trees that stand within the public right of way unless the trees pose significant and direct threat to public health and safety. Trees within the right of way remain the property, and responsibility, of the holder of the deed for the land over which the right of way passes.
