LEWISTON – Cpl. Robert Ullrich, an 11-year veteran of the Lewiston Police Department, was named officer of the year by the Lewiston Police Relief Association.
In addition, Chief William Welch and others were also honored with awards from the Maine Chiefs of Police Association.
Ullrich was presented the award this month.
“Corporal Ullrich has earned respect and admiration from his peers, supervisors and command staff of the department,” police Chief William Welch said. “Over the years, he has assumed numerous responsibilities and has excelled in all of them.”
Ullrich has served as the department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer, Lewiston High School resource officer and manages an underage drinking grant. These duties, coupled with his regular patrol responsibilities serve as a vivid example of his motivation and talents, Welch said.
“Corporal Ullrich is a team player,” the chief said. “He strives to continuously make the Lewiston Police Department a better organization. Corporal Ullrich is always a catalyst for positive change. His can-do attitude serves to motivate those around him.”
“Moreover,” the chief said, “he effortlessly displays sound leadership qualities and can be trusted to make good decisions even under adverse or stressful conditions. His self-initiated drive that has been demonstrated over his 11-year career as a Lewiston Police Officer has been exemplary and has earned him the respect and admiration of those who work with him.”
Welch was recognized for his dedication and leadership in the fight against cyber crime. His leadership and efforts were key in establishing the Maine Computer Crimes Task Force, according to the chiefs association.
Officer Jeremy Somma was recognized for coordinating law enforcement and 911 communications out of the Maine State Police in tracking an injured victim who was unable to speak. The victim was only able to dial 911. Fortunately his phone was equipped with GPS capabilities.
Officers William Rousseau and Corey Jacques were heralded with rescuing a resident and his dog from a burning home on Old Lisbon Road.
