100 Years Ago: 1918
The Empire Grove Methodist camp meeting in Poland begins tonight with a sermon by Rev. Kendall Burgess of Oxford. Sunday will be an important day connecting the Epworth League Institute, which has been holding meetings during the week at the Grove with those of the coming week. Sunday morning the special speaker will be Rev. E. H. Brewster of Auburn, and in the afternoon it will be Rev. E.C.E Dorian, D.D., Boston, associate editor of Zions Herald. On Sunday, Aug. 18, the last day of the meeting, Rev. A. B. Moss, D.D., missionary from India, will be the speaker. Bishop J.W. Hamilton, D.D., of Washington, D.C., chancellor of the the American University, known all over the world will give the address.
50 Years Ago: 1968
The marquee of the Empire Theater on Main Street, Lewiston, which tells the title of the movie currently playing will have to be moved back from its present position if the street is widened. An agreement was discussed with Lewiston and the State Highway Commission, which could mean the street from the bridge to Island Avenue would be widened. This agreement was discussed Tuesday night at a meeting of the board of mayor and aldermen, and the board voted to seek reconsideration of that portion of the agreement dealing with parking on the south side of the street.
25 Years Ago: 1968
Androscoggin Head Start is accepting applications for the 1993-1994 school year. To be eligible, a child must be 4 years of age by Oct. 15 and from a low-income family. The program also accepts children with special needs. Head Start offers a program of education, social services, parent involvement, health, and nutrition. Families are also served at home through the Home Base Head Start Program, which accepts children who are 3 to 4 years old.
