SOUTH PORTLAND – A former Lewiston man remained at a Portland jail on Wednesday, accused of attempting to meet with what he thought was a teenage girl for sex.

Nicholas Webster, 27, was one of four men charged with attempted gross sexual assault during a sting operation in South Portland.

Police said Webster went to South Portland under the belief that he would be meeting a 13-year-old girl he had met on the Internet. Instead, he was greeted by a group of police officers who had been working with a national group that targets online predators.

Webster has remained at the Cumberland County Jail since his January arrest. He was being held on $25,000 cash bail.

Lewiston police said they had dealings with Webster earlier in the decade for offenses like vehicle infractions and trespass, but that it appeared Webster has lived in South Portland for the past several years.

The other men charged in the police sting are from Scarborough and West Bath.
