AUBURN – A new bar, targeting a more mature crowd, is scheduled to open next week on Main Street.

The Black Bear Tavern will take up the space formerly occupied by the Cellar Door. That bar was shut down by the city for rowdiness in August.

“We’re trying to stay away from that crowd,” said bar Manager Mark Bragdon of Lisbon. “We knew about the problems with the Cellar Door, and we’re staying away from hip hop and dance. We’re more in the market to offer live entertainment, classic rock and karaoke.”

City councilors are scheduled to vote on the club’s liquor license and special-use permits at their meeting Monday night. Bragdon said the city has scheduled an inspection on Monday and state liquor officials are scheduled to inspect on Tuesday.

“If everything goes OK, we’ll open our doors on Wednesday,” Bragdon said. The club is scheduled to be open nightly, except for Sundays.

Bragdon said owners Leif Nickerson and John Paquette, both of Auburn, have been working since August to refurbish the space, installing new plumbing and fixtures and redesigning the space.

“They’ve been very careful, meeting with police and city officials to talk about what everyone needs,” Bragdon said. “We don’t want to do all this work and spend all this money to just get shut down.”

Rowdiness is to blame for shutting down the Cellar Door over the summer. Police cited an increased number of calls to the popular dance club, as well as noise complaints from neighbors. Councilors agreed to grant owner Paul Morency a liquor license for his upstairs bar, the Midnight Blues Club, if he closed the Cellar Door.

Morency agreed, but closed the upstairs club last month anyway, citing a lack of business.

Bragdon said the Black Bear Tavern will target the same crowd that went to Midnight Blues.

“We’ve cleaned up the space a lot,” he said. “We’re still looking for a big stuffed black bear for a mascot. The place will be decorated with animal heads on the wall and will definitely have a more rustic look.”

Bragdon said he’s heard rumors that his tavern will be joined by an upstairs neighbor in the next few months, taking over the Midnight Blues Club’s old space. A family-style restaurant/sports bar is being considered, he said.

Maureen Aube, business support specialist for the city of Auburn, said she doesn’t know of any discussions for filling the Blues Club space.
