MECHANIC FALLS – In addition to choosing a governor and legislative representatives to Augusta and Washington, townspeople will be selecting people to serve on a commission to update the town’s charter on Nov. 7.
Town Clerk Shirley Marquis explained that in the years since the town last revised the charter, which serves as a guide for how the town governs itself, a number of small changes have occurred in how the town actually operates.
Marquis noted that these are largely “housekeeping items” – as simple as language that directs voters “to mark the box,” which is no longer how ballots are designed, to the date of the annual town meeting, which was shifted from the traditional March date to May – but nonetheless important corrections.
Voters will choose six residents to serve on the charter commission and the town council will appoint another three, bringing the total number on the commission to nine.
It is the town council’s desire, Marquis noted, that the charter commission begins its work immediately and report back its recommendations in time for a town-wide referendum to be held in conjunction with next June’s regular election.
Polls, located in the municipal gymnasium on Lewiston Street, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 7.
