LEWISTON – In Auburn, it was a tree down across a road. In Lewiston, it was flooded roads. In other towns and cities, power was out.
Friday’s wet and dismal weather was more than depressing, it was a hassle for police, power and public works officials.
By 9 p.m., Central Maine Power Co. reported nearly 4,000 customers without power. Most of them were in the areas of Alfred, Brunswick and Bridgton.
In Lewiston, wet roads slowed traffic on Lisbon Street, Main Street and near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge. In Auburn, crews were sent to a tree down on Lake Shore Drive.
In Lewiston, police said few problems resulted from wet roads and a relentless downpour, although it made for a soggy night of police work.
“The public works crews are out, and they’re getting things unclogged pretty quick,” said Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle.
By late Friday night, two inches of rain had fallen in Lewiston and the surrounding area. Similar numbers were recorded in Wilton, Gorham and closer to the coast.
The good news: weather forecasters were promising better weather for the weekend.
“We’ve had a lot of rain, and the winds have been gusting,” said Butch Roberts of the National Weather Service in Gray. “It should be over pretty soon. Things will look a lot brighter in the morning.”
