SABATTUS – Town officials announced that residents will soon get online capabilities for renewing motor-vehicle registrations and dog licenses.
Town Administrator Tracie Fabrizio said this will allow residents to pay using debit or credit cards, something the town office is currently not capable of doing.
“We will try this for a year and see how it works,” selectman Gino Camardese said at the selectmen’s meeting Tuesday night.
By having the Internet service, the town office will be able to cut back on office hours and allow all office workers to work the same hours.
Fabrizio said residents wishing to continue business as usual with the town office will be able to do so.
In other news, Sabattus Fire Chief Don Therrien addressed the board about drafting a burning ordinance, complete with enforcement policies.
Under the town’s current practice, residents can get free burning permits during the week as long as the permit is issued for same-day burning. Fabrizio said purchasing permits in advance is not permitted.
This has caused some problems during the weekend. Therrien said he has been visited by residents at his home to receive a permit.
“I don’t consider this professional,” he said, which is, in part, why he is pushing residents to go online and purchase a burning permit for $7 through the state.
Therrien is currently exploring the idea of having a firefighter in the office for a few hours on the weekend to issue permits. He added that a town service fee may be applied to help pay for staffing the office.
