FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington Community Orchestra announces a competition for Maine student composers to write a new work for the orchestra. The winning composition will be premiered by the UMF Orchestra under its conductor, Trond Saeverud, in May 2007.

The competition is open to students born after May 31, 1982, studying composition at an accredited Maine high school or college. The maximum instrumentation is double winds, two horns, one percussionist and strings.

The composition may be any duration between 5 and 15 minutes (although complex works should be on the shorter side). It must not have had a previous public performance.

The winner will receive $200, a premiere of the composition at the UMF Community Orchestra’s concert on May 4, 2007, and a recording of the performance. The deadline for receipt of scores is Friday, Jan. 19, 2007.
