PARIS – A Lewiston man whose passenger died in a crash last summer on Route 108 was sentenced Thursday to a year in prison.

Robert J. Brimage Jr., 27, of 142 Oxford St., was sentenced in Oxford County Superior Court after he was convicted on a manslaughter charge. As part of a plea arrangement, charges of criminal drunken driving and driving with a suspended license were dropped.

Police said that on the morning of July 24, 2005, Brimage was driving south on Route 108 when his 1990 Chrysler New Yorker went off the road. The car severed a utility pole and slammed into a house.

Both occupants of the car had to be extricated by rescue crews. Brimage was flown to a Lewiston hospital. His passenger, Ricky Steedley, 44, of Peru, was dead at the scene, police said.

Investigators said Brimage was legally drunk when he crashed. His license had been suspended in February 2002 based on previous, unrelated charges.

He was indicted on criminal charges stemming from the fatal crash by an Oxford County grand jury in December.

On Thursday, Brimage was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but one of those years suspended. He was also ordered to serve four years of probation upon his release.
