I recently sent a letter to the editor of the Sun Journal, which was printed Nov. 26. In the letter, I indicated that Commissioners Roland Martin and Pat McGowan took a helicopter to a meeting at Baxter State Park. I was wrong.
Bill Williams of the Maine Forest Service took the time to call me and personally address my concerns. He explained the budget, usage, and who flies in the Forest Service helicopters. A state official was picked up at Baxter to be at an important meeting that afternoon in northern Maine. Martin and McGowan were not on that flight.
The important part of my letter was that officials from the state of Maine should not be using a helicopter to go to meetings while cutting school budgets. I said, “Sell the helicopter.” In fact, it is now for sale.
My sincerest apologies for not verifying the facts.
Walter Cary, Lewiston
