Dear Sun Spots: I read your information every day, and now I wonder what you can do for me.
Before World War II, we used to have eggs done in a crock. Now I wonder, as I remember we were told not to use the crock for anything else after that.
This week I happened to think, did we put something in the water so as not to use it? The extension service, and friends can’t help me and I’m hoping other readers may recall this tip. Thank you for your help. – Florence P., Wilton.
Answer: Unfortunately, Sun Spots has not located anything based on the information you provided. Hopefully, there are readers out there familiar with this who would be willing to share this with Sun Spots readers.
Dear Sun Spots: You’ve been kind enough to help me many times, and I need help now.
How can I get rid of crickets who chirp almost all night?
I also have four African violet plants that do not blossom. What is the problem? – No Name, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots checked with Sun Journal gardening editor Jody Goodwin, who says crickets are a wonderful part of Maine life, and you cannot get rid of them nor should you want to. Crickets, along with spring peepers and pond frogs, are indicative of a healthy ecosystem, she says. Might you be able to close the windows and put on a fan? The sound of crickets is soothing to many people because it speaks of nature and wonder. However, if the cricket is in her house, a good treasure hunt and capture might be in order!
Regarding your second question, according to www.bachman.com, if the plant looks healthy, is in the right size pot (a little crowded), gets lots of light and still doesn’t bloom, try adding a fertilizer that is higher in phosphorus. Sometimes the plants simply rest for a few months, usually in winter, before starting another bloom cycle. In our low-light winters, there really isn’t enough light to trigger blooming. They prefer 10-14 hours of light per day.
Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for a device to sound out snoring. I saw it on television a while back. You put it on a bureau, and it makes a certain sound, tuning out the snoring. I am using a fan now, but I don’t like the air flow. Thank you for any help. – No Name, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots believes you may be referring to the MARPAC Sound Screen Sleep Mate 980 advertised on www.amazon.com. It’s described as creating a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air. The tone and volume of the sound can be controlled and the “white noise” sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax or sleep. There are several “white noise” machines listed on www.sleepperfection.com that might also interest you.
