Ski-a-thon set

NEWRY – Maine Handicapped Skiing will conduct its 21st anniversary Ski-A-Thon on Saturday, March 18, at Sunday River Ski Resort and the Sunday River Inn and Cross Country Ski Center. More than 700 skiers and riders will take to the slopes and trails to raise pledges for Maine Handicapped Skiing’s year-round adaptive recreation activities.

Teams of five people raise a minimum of $600 in pledges to participate in the Ski-A-Thon. Every team member gets a free day of skiing or riding courtesy, breakfast, lunch and dinner, an event T-shirt, a goodie bag, free 10-minute massages and evening entertainment.

Maine Handicapped Skiing continues to offer adaptive recreational lessons, winter and summer, free to more than 280 participants yearly. To learn more about the Ski-A-Thon, call MHS at 800-639-7770 or go online at www.skimhs.org/Ski-A-Thon.

Preservation call

PORTLAND – Maine Preservation announces its Call for Nominations for the 10th annual Statewide Historic Preservation Honor Awards.

Categories include commercial and residential restoration/rehabilitation, adaptive use, cultural landscape preservation, organizational excellence, crafts/trades and the preservation champion award, recognizing individual accomplishment in history preservation.

Nomination forms, submission criteria and a list of previous honor awardees may be obtained by visiting Maine Preservation’s Web site at www.mainepreservation.org or by phoning 775-3652. Nominations must be received by March 31 and may be mailed or delivered to Maine Preservation, 500 Congress St., second floor, Portland, ME 04101.

The awards celebration will take place on May 12 during National Preservation Month and in honor of the organization’s 35th anniversary.

Council grant

PORTLAND – The Maine Council of Churches has received a grant from the Rines/Thompson Fund through the Maine Community Foundation to work with homeless teens on developing a self-empowering drama about their lives and experiences as homeless people. The project is called “Voices From the Street: Youth Speak.”

The Preble Street Teen Center is organizing community support through their youth program, the source for potential participants in the project.
