Dear Sun Spots: I would like to invite any former students of Ann Stauffer Behnke to a party.
She is retiring this June after teaching for many years in the Auburn School Department. She taught sixth grade at St. Louis Public School from 1972-1981 and fourth grade at Webster School from 1981 to present. She wants to throw a party for her students. She will have old pictures to view and you can bring along fond memories. The celebration is from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 11 at the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn. – Pamela Leary, Auburn.
Dear Sun Spot: Would like to give away a few things so hopefully you can help me. I have knitting books, queen-size water bed frame, and headboard, free. You can reach me at 782-9409. Thank you. – C. Grenier, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: I started taking ballroom dancing lessons such as waltz, cha cha and more this past winter in Florida. I would like to continue, preferring private lessons in the Lewiston or Auburn area. – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Please help me as you have done in the past.
My dog, which I’ve had for 14 years, is ready to be put to sleep. She has become ill with age. I am looking for another dog to replace her, preferably a small, lap dog. I can’t afford to pay but I promise to give her a wonderful and happy home with plenty of attention. Please call James at (207) 345-5091. Thank you. – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: I’m searching for a recipe for Woonsocket Doughnuts. My Mum made these years ago. The dough was cut in diamond shapes, fried in oil, and then coated with, I think, a molasses mixture. Searched the Web to no avail. – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: I would like to locate someone in my area who has aged mature or compost that can be delivered to my home. – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Years ago when I worked at A Knapp shoe doing stitching, some one brought in a recipe for a cake called wowie cake. It was chocolate and when it baked it rose quite a bit. It was also very light in texture, which is why it was called “wowie cake.” I haven’t been able to find my copy of the recipe and am looking for anyone who might have it. – No Name, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots located the following recipe:
Wowie chocolate cake recipe ingredients: 1 cup sugar, 1½ cups flour, ½ tsp. salt, ¼ cup cocoa, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/3 cup vegetable oil, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 cup cold water, 1 tablespoon vinegar. Method: Sift first five ingredients into a mixing bowl. Add rest of ingredients and stir until smooth, then beat for two minutes and pour into ungreased pan (8-by-8 inches) and bake for 35 minutes at 350.
Dear Sun Spots: I have a Sharp, electric, portable typewriter with three extra ribbons that I’d be glad to donate it to some charitable organization.
Also, I would like to know if there is someone in the area who can repair my IBM Selectric typewriter. You perform a great service to the public. Keep it up. – No Name, Farmington.
Answer: You should try contacting Affordable Business Machines. They do pickups and deliveries at no extra charge in the Lewiston-Auburn, Farmington, Norway, South Paris areas and others. They also sell and repair ribbons for typewriters. You can reach them at (207) 946-2949.
