AUGUSTA – Nonprofit organizations, towns and municipalities seeking funds for outdoor recreation, conservation or wildlife projects are reminded that Sept. 1 is the deadline for fall grants to be awarded by the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund.
Also on Sept. 1, the newest Outdoor Heritage instant ticket, “Lucky Duck,” will be released to all lottery agents throughout the state.
The Outdoor Heritage program, established by the State Legislature in 1996 as an additional funding source for conservation and wildlife projects, is a unique grant program supported by proceeds from Maine’s only “dedicated” lottery ticket.
Since the Outdoor Heritage tickets went on sale nearly a decade ago, more than $13 million in grants has been awarded to more than 400 projects throughout the state. All other state lottery tickets benefit the General Fund.
The lottery ticket benefits fisheries and wildlife projects; habitat conservation; acquisition and management of public lands, parks, outdoor recreation sites and facilities; endangered and threatened species conservation and natural resources law enforcement.
Grant applicants must partner with one of several designated natural resource agencies to apply in one of four categories. Applications and more information can be obtained by calling 623-2355 or by visiting www.maine.gov/ifw/outdoorheritage.
