LEWISTON – A street cop’s ability to develop sources was credited by a police lieutenant Sunday for leading to the arrest of an alleged drug dealer.

Officer Wayne Clifford “had developed some information about a person coming into the city on a bus,” said Lt. Tom Avery Sunday evening as he recounted the Saturday afternoon bust.

Clifford waited for the bus to arrive, then approached Mansfield Stuckey, 52, of 391 Lisbon St. near the bus station at Bates and College streets to confront the suspect.

“He noticed a suspicious bulge on Mr. Stuckey,” said Avery, and called for the assistance of a drug-sniffing State Police dog.

The result: A bag with 23 smaller bags filled with crack cocaine were confiscated after being found in Stuckey’s underwear, said Avery.

Stuckey was charged with trafficking in Schedule W drugs and trafficking in prison contraband.

The latter charge was filed because the drugs were found on Stuckey at the Androscoggin County Jail due to the need for the search.

Stuckey was being held at the jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Avery said Clifford’s ability to “work the streets and develop good sources” led directly to the arrest.
