The process that selectmen used to appoint members to the town Charter Committee is being challenged.
According to state policy, an election must be held allowing voters the chance to place the members on the committee. Some selectmen claim they received notice from the Maine Municipal Association that this is not always the practice. Selectman Stephen Wood said the town’s selection process, with uses names of interested residents, along with the nominations of two alternates, does comply with state procedure. The issue was tabled until more information could be supplied. Selectmen are waiting on the outcome before appointing alternates.
The Charter Committee meets a6 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of the month at the municipal building.
Greene: DOT, rail officials to address repairs
The Maine Department of Transportation and railroad officials are on board to help fix a recurring problem at all of the town’s railroad crossings, Town Manager Charlie Noonan said at a recent meeting.
“Every time the train goes by it rattles the rails, causing the roads to fall apart,” Tufts said. “They’re talking about going in and putting in the right expansion rails to stop that from happening.”
The three crossings are on College, Sprague Mill and Sawyer roads. Sawyer Road is maintained by the state, and although MDOT has told Noonan that it may not be budgeted this year, it was on a list of issues to address.
