LEWISTON – New Lewiston Adult Education students will have to take an extra math class and at least one writing course in order to get a high school diploma.
The Lewiston School Committee approved the extra requirements Monday. They apply to students who enter the program after July 1.
The Adult Education Program allows teenagers and adults to earn a high school diploma by taking classes during the day or at night. Students may also earn credits through correspondence courses, by showing work and military experience and by studying at home. Currently, Adult Education students need 19 credits to get a diploma. Officials asked to increase that to 20.
Lewiston High School students still must earn 24.
Adult Education students will now have to obtain three credits in math instead of two. They will still be required to earn four English credits, but at least one must be from a writing course.
Adult Education officials are changing their diploma requirements through 2008. They eventually want students to earn the same number of credits required by Lewiston High School and meet the state’s Learning Results standards.
“This is one step in the right direction,” said director Betty Gundersdorf.
