AUBURN – Road crews will close Mechanics Row along Auburn Hall Monday, taking advantage of the Patriots Day holiday.
“We’re trying to disrupt traffic minimally, not just for city and school employees but for people that have business at Auburn Hall,” said Paul Niehoff, city pavement management technician.
Plans call for a complete reclamation of the road from Court Street to Main Street. That means crews will use grinding tools and loaders to remove existing pavement on the street.
New pavement won’t be put down on the road for several weeks, however.
“It’s too early in the year for new pavement,” Niehoff said. “The asphalt manufacturing plants are not even open yet. We just saw an opportunity when traffic there would be light and thought we should take advantage of it to remove the road.”
Crews won’t have to close the entire road when they do repave, he said. They should be able to pave one lane at a time, leaving part of it open for traffic at all times.
“We might also do it early in the morning when there isn’t that much traffic,” Niehoff said.
