AUBURN – A man who police say was stabbed a half-dozen times inside a Goff Street apartment early Monday was recovering at a Lewiston hospital.

Michael Bailey, 21, was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center, where he was being treated for at least six stab wounds.

A second man injured during the early morning fracas at 120 Goff St. went to the hospital hours later with unspecified wounds, police said. That victim was reported missing from the hospital about 9:45 p.m. after ripping out an intravenous line and leaving CMMC in a hospital gown. Police in both Lewiston and Auburn were searching for him late Monday night. He was not identified.

No arrests were made in the case on Monday. The stabbing was reported at 2 a.m.

Police said Bailey was one of several people inside his Goff Street apartment when a fight broke out. The brawl moved from the apartment and into a hall, where Bailey was stabbed repeatedly, police said.

When police and rescue workers arrived, Bailey had collapsed in a snowbank outside the home, which may have helped slow complications from his wounds.

Bailey was taken to CMMC, where he underwent surgery. Police, meanwhile, began questioning others who were at the party where the fight began.

Investigators said they were getting little cooperation from potential witnesses in the case, including Bailey. It was not known what spurred the fight that led to the knifing.

Police said they are familiar with Bailey from previous incidents in Auburn. In November 2001, Bailey was arrested after stealing a pickup truck in Lewiston and crashing the vehicle on the Auburn side of the Longley Bridge.

Three people were hurt in the wreck and Bailey ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless conduct and charges of unauthorized use of property and driving with a suspended license. Months after the crash, Bailey was sentenced to a year in jail.
