LEEDS – A family of three was left homeless and several house pets perished Wednesday after a morning fire swept through a trailer on Route 202.
Leeds firefighters and crews from Monmouth and surrounding towns were called out at about 10:30 a.m. for a report of flames at the home.
Crews spent hours at the scene, and by the time the fire was knocked down, the trailer was considered a total loss.
“By the time the fire was noticed, it was going real good,” said Leeds Fire Chief Glenn Holt.
A couple and their 2-year-old son who live in the trailer were not at home when the fire started, fire officials said. The cause of the blaze was still being investigated Wednesday night.
Fire crews from Leeds, Monmouth, Wales and Greene battled the blaze, while firefighters from Turner filled in at the Leeds Fire Department.
Crews battled to save an apartment house roughly 15 feet from the burning building, as well as a single-family home on the other side. Flames were stopped before they could reach the other structures.
“That was a real concern,” Holt said.
Two dogs and two cats died in the blaze.
Fire officials called the United Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross who sent members to the fire scene. The Red Cross Wednesday night was assisting the family with food, clothing and temporary lodging.
“The family had no insurance so they literally lost everything,” Holt said.
After a series of local fires, the Red Cross was reminding people that donations can be made to help the local disaster relief fund. Contributions may be sent to the United Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 439, Auburn, ME 04212.
