AUBURN – Sheriff’s Department Capt. Raymond Lafrance told the Androscoggin County Commission on Wednesday that insurance may not cover the full cost of replacing a patrol vehicle destroyed in a rollover crash in Minot on Sunday night.

Lafrance said an insurance adjuster said the 2004 Chevrolet Impala cruiser, which had about 19,000 miles, was totaled. The vehicle was purchased in late 2003 and delivered to the Sheriff’s Department in February. The difference between the value estimated by the insurance company and the cost of the vehicle is about $1,900.

He told the commission that because of the time of year, it might be necessary to purchase a 2005 model. “We’re probably better off getting a 2005 because of depreciation,” Lafrance said, adding that he might bring a proposal to the commission on Oct. 17.

An older vehicle with about 95,000 miles is currently being used for double duty due to the absence of the wrecked cruiser.

There were no injuries in the rollover crash of the sheriff’s cruiser that was en route to an accident on Jackson Hill Road in Auburn about 10 p.m. Sunday.

In other business, the commission authorized Androscoggin County Emergency Management Agency Director Joanne Potvin to spend funds from the 2004 Homeland Security grant to fund a 16-hour per week position for the county’s Homeland Security program.

The commission also authorized hiring former Emergency Management Agency Director Peter Van Gagnon, who retired last year, to fill the part-time vacancy.
