DURHAM – The semiannual bulky waste cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15, in the field behind the Eureka Community Center on Route 136, which is Royalsborough Road.

It is open to Durham residents only; identification will be required.

People may phone the town office at 353-2561, extension 4, to find out which items are accepted free. Some of the acceptable items require a fee that must be paid in advance at the town office.

Not accepted are propane tanks, household trash, batteries, car/truck parts, construction demolition debris, brush, recyclables, hazardous waste, TVs or computer screens.

Free clear trash bags are available at the town office for the annual roadside cleanup only, which is under way. No personal, yard or “behind-the-barn” trash will be accepted. Fill a clear bag, leave it on the side of the road May 13 and 14, and it will be picked up by the town’s trash hauler, Pine Tree Waste Inc.

Acceptable items are: appliances such as stoves, ranges, microwaves; furniture, (metal frames of beds and couches must be removed); mattresses, box springs; rugs and carpeting cut in 3- by 3-foot squares or smaller; large metal items, scrap metal (no car or truck parts); large plastic items such as toys.

Appliances such as freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners must be red-tagged, indicating the freon has been removed by a professional prior to delivery to the collection site.

To facilitate off-loading, light and small loads will be given priority over heavier or large loads.

The Eureka Community Center Committee has made arrangements to pick up trash at the homes of those who don’t have a means to bring it to the bulky waste cleanup site, or are physically unable to do so.

The fee for this service starts at $10 for a load, but Community Center volunteers want to inspect what people have during the week before the cleanup day to set a price. The item(s) must be in a garage or outside with easy access. Phone Steve at 353-2155 between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m. All proceeds from this volunteer service will go to the Eureka Community Center.
