LEWISTON – Crews are set to raze more downtown buildings Saturday, this time at the corner of Lisbon and Cedar streets.

The city began working last summer to demolish 359 Lisbon St. and now has a court order to bring it down. The city bought its neighbor at 369 Lisbon St., and will bring that building down as well.

“They share a common wall, and it would have left 369 Lisbon St. in an unstable manner,” said Norm Beauparlant, director of budget and purchasing.

Beauparlant said crews have been working at the 369 Lisbon St. building for more than a month, getting it ready for destruction and removing asbestos. The building was the home for City Cab dispatch.

The building at 359 Lisbon St. has been vacant for at least five years. Officials first targeted it for destruction in July. Building owners Klister LLC made a bid to save it then and agreed to submit a redevelopment proposal. Owners never contacted the city and no work was done.

“We’ve been working on it specifically for about a month,” Beauparlant said. “The climax of the whole project is taking down the building, and that’s where we are.”

Beauparlant was unaware of plans to redevelop the property, he said.
