A Poland pilot leads the list of honorees at this year’s WCSH Six Who Care awards.
Pilot Jim Platz will be honored for his work with Angel Flight New England, said WCSH community relations director Charlene Belanger.
The remaining five honorees should be released today, she said. Platz is the only honoree from the Lewiston-Auburn area, she said.
Platz has flown more than 700 missions for Angel Flight. As a member, he provides free flights to people who need to get to certain areas for special medical treatment. For example, he might fly a Maine child suffering from cancer to a treatment center in New York.
Fellow pilot Lil Leblanc said she nominated Platz for that work and for being a caring and generous friend. Leblanc, her husband and Platz all fly out of Auburn Lewiston Municipal Airport.
“Many people think these are just millionaires playing games,” Leblanc said. “Then you have somebody come along like Jim, and you can see the real benefit to the community.
Platz and the other winners will be honored at a special ceremony on Oct. 13. Belanger said the television station will produce a two- to three-minute profile about each honoree. The ceremony will be taped and broadcast on the station from 8 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 27.
