CANTON – A Sumner man was killed in an accident on Route 140 early Saturday morning after the Jeep Cherokee he was driving crashed.

Peter McPherson, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Maine State Trooper Nathan Jamo. A passenger in the car, Mary Dakin, age unknown, of Canton, was taken by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. No information about her condition was available.

According to police, it appeared McPherson was traveling about 50 miles per hour as he rounded a sharp curve in a 25 mile-per-hour zone and lost control of the vehicle. The accident was reported at 2 a.m.

Dakin’s husband, David, and two children were also passengers in the car but were unhurt.
