SABATTUS – It appears this year’s ice racing season is over.
Races scheduled for Sunday on Sabattus Pond were called off after officials of the New Meadows Ice Racing Association found two problems. The lake had too much standing water, the result of recent rain and snow melt, and the access area used by racers to get on the lake was deteriorating quickly.
Roland LeBlond of New Gloucester, who leads in this year’s stock class for the club’s ice racers, said he doubts that conditions will allow for a resumption of races this year.
The club has two classes of racing, stock and modified. Most racers use front-wheel drive vehicles such as Dodge Neons and Hondas, LeBlond said. All use either studded or specially spiked tires.
He said there’s a chance of an invitational race being held on Moosehead Lake next weekend, but LeBlond noted that the race date isn’t chiseled in ice.
