Norway drivers collide in Auburn

AUBURN – A woman and two children were hurt Wednesday morning when the car they were riding in slammed into a city plow on Youngs Corner Road.

Shannon White, 25, of 63 Cottage St., Norway, was in stable condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Wednesday night.

White suffered two broken ankles and an injured spleen in the 9 a.m. crash involving a car, an SUV and the plow truck, police said. A 5-year-old boy in her car was treated for a possible concussion. A 2-year-old boy was examined for pain.

Investigators said White lost control of her car while driving east on Youngs Corner Road, which was wet and slushy at the time.

White’s car slid across the center lane and struck an oncoming plow truck driven by Timothy C. Hahn, 27, of Lewiston. Hahn was not hurt.

John P. Carroll, 51, of 33 Parsons Drive, Norway, was unable to stop in time as he drove up on the scene of the crash. His vehicle plowed into White’s after the initial collision.

Carroll was not seriously hurt in the wreck.

Police spoke with the drivers as well as witnesses as they investigated the crash. The collision was believed to be the result of slick roads following a storm that dropped rain and sleet on the area.

Hahn was hauling dirt for the city but was not in the process of dumping it on the road at the time of the crash, according to a police report. Damage to the 1990 Harvester, owned by the city of Auburn, was estimated at $7,000.

Damage to White’s 1999 Saturn was estimated at $8,000 and to Carroll’s 1999 Mercury, $5,000.
