WINTHROP- Winthrop’s new high school will open a week late.

Officials announced this week that classes will start at Winthrop High School, the town’s new 360-student high school, on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The first day of school had been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Superintendent Paula Gaudet said there have been delays in construction.

“There were a number of things,” she said. “We didn’t know where the bleachers were. And that was our only gathering place.”

According to Gaudet, phone lines and computers are only now being installed. The school’s elevator was just recently inspected. And workers are still cleaning the multimillion dollar building.

“It’s just a little bit of everything,” she said.

The school’s dedication, originally scheduled for Monday, has also been postponed. A new date has not yet been announced.

Although the high school will start late, Winthrop Grade School and Winthrop Middle School will begin on time. Students in kindergarten through grade eight will have orientation on Tuesday. Students in kindergarten through grade eight will have their first full day on Wednesday.

Officials do not yet know how high-schoolers will make up the four days they will miss.
