Mechanic Falls: Group purchases recommended
The School Committee was told Tuesday night that the diploma requirements for the Bakerstown Alternative Education program needs to be aligned with the high school requirements.
Bill Doughty, who took over as assistant superintendent July 31, said a committee should be formed to align the requirements of the adult program with that of Poland Regional High School. After the meeting, he said doing so would conform to Maine Learning Results standards.
In other business, Superintendent Nina Schlikin said there could be considerable savings if school buses are purchased union-wide, rather than by each town. Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland are the three towns in Union 29. Schlikin also began her job this summer.
Elm Street School Principal Mary Martin said kindergarten orientation will be Aug. 21 and an open house will be held Sept. 4.

Poland: Demolition undecided
The fate of two boathouses that were slated for demolition remains in limbo. The Planning Board agreed Tuesday night to allow an application from 2002 to be modified.
The board decided in July that David Moyer would be able to retain one or both of his boathouses if they were at least 50 feet from the high-water mark. Moyer recently renovated a lakefront camp.
Moyer asked the board for more information Tuesday night. “The board was receptive to allowing him to modify his application from last year. He’ll be coming back in,” said Code Enforcement Officer Arthur Dunlap.
In other business, the board approved a 14-lot subdivision off Route 26 and Highview Drive by Rick Spear.
In another matter, George Gendron will be allowed to build a parking area at camp in a shoreland zoning area on Birch Drive.
Also, Les Stevens of Image Inc. inquired about making slight changes to two structures at the Poland Spring Inn. Dunlap said the board members determined that they didn’t need to review the plan so Dunlap can issue a building permit.
