Dear Sun Spots: Since I have searched around for the answer and got nothing, I thought that I would go to the head of the great mystery solvers: Sun Spots.
I am looking for the answers to how does this happen, how it can be prevented and how to fix once there?
I have a kitchen runner in front of my sink that had a rubber backing on it. The backing has turned my linoleum yellow where it has been placed. Now I have heard of this sort of thing happening to friends who have rugs placed around the toilet and tub area. So, I am wondering what can I now use for a chemical on the floor that will remove such a stain. I am not about to replace a floor that is virtually brand new. Any help with be appreciated. – Tammy-Lyn P., in Peru.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, in a previous column Sun Spots spoke with Cathy Stevenson of ServiceMaster Clean, P.O. Box 191, Oxford, ME 04270 (1-800-244-7630, (207) 783-6310), who says this is usually difficult to remove, if it can be at all. What is happening is the backing on the rug interacts with the vinyl, causing the discoloration you speak of. You might want to contact Cathy and talk to her about this. You may also want to contact Armstrong’s customer service department at 1-800-233-3823.
