AUBURN – Auburn Tax Assessor Joe Downey will step down from his job at the end of the year.

Downey said he told City Manager Pat Finnigan of his decision to leave on Friday, but Downey would not say why he decided to retire at this time.

He came to the city in 1987, leaving his post as tax assessor for Freeport. He helped finish a complete revaluation of city property values in 1990 and a property values update in 1995.

Downey and his staff began a new revaluation of the city last year. Tax appraisers are about halfway through that process, which should wrap up about the time Downey leaves the job.

“I will be seeing that project through,” he said.

Downey, an Auburn resident, said he has made no plans for his time after leaving the city.
