Young Mr. Juanso apparently got some erroneous information concerning the 1986 world series. He writes “The Sox had a 3-2 lead over the Mets. They were one STRIKE AWAY!!!! from winning, but they couldn’t hold on. A shot by rookie Mookie Wilson through Buckner’s legs cost the Red Sox the game.”.
The fact is, the Sox had a 3 game to 2 lead in the series. They were in fact one strike away from winning the series, but a wild pitch by Maine native Bob Stanley allowed the tying run to come home making the score 5 to 5. When Bill Buckner made the error, the game was already tied and had he not made that error the game would have gone into the eleventh inning which would have given the Sox one more chance at losing. So please do the put blame on Buckner for losing the series.
