Rodger Clemens, known as “the rocket” is one of the greatest pitchers in the Boston Red Sox franchise history. In this story you will learn of his signing in 1984, his big 1986 year, and his farewell to the Sox.
Red Sox sign Clemens
The Red Sox signed Rodger Clemens in the 1984 draft as the 14th pick at the age of 21. As every Red Sox fan saw he immediately showed that his minor league career was nothing. During his first seasons with the Red Sox, Rodger showed incredible talent . Right away the Red Sox knew he was going to be an all-star pitcher.
Big night in April 1986-1996
On April 29, 1986 vs. the Mariners he had 20 strikeouts in a 3-1 victory. Ten years later he k’d 20 tigers in Detroit, Rodger proved he was a “rocket” powered pitcher. He set a record.
Boston trades Clemens to Jays
At the end of the 1995-1996 season, after finishing a disappointing 10-13, Rodger Clemens was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. Red Sox fans are still upset today. Last season Clemens and his other team the New York Yankees, eliminated Boston from the playoffs in seven games 4-3. Rodger Clemens now plays for the Houston Astros but fans still remember “the Rocket” when he pitches for the Sox.
