I recently read a book called “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure and values friendship.
This book is about a girl named Karana. Karana is the daughter of the chief of Ghalas-at. Ghalas-at is a tribe on Island of the Blue Dolphins. One day Karana sees a ship in the distance while she was gathering roots with her brother Ramo. It is the Aleut people coming to hunt otter.
The Aleuts agree to give the people of Ghalas-at a portion of what they kill. All is going according to plan, but then the Aleuts try to leave without paying up. Things are already being loaded on to the ship when the tribe gets there.
Karana’s father gets into an argument with Captain Orlov, the Russian leader of the Aleuts. Soon, others join in and the argument turns violent. When the Aleuts leave, there are only three or four men still living, her father not being one of them.
One day a different ship comes. The white men offer to take the remaining people to their land and let them live there but, when Ramo gets left behind, her only choice is to jump ship to save her brother. Soon, she realizes she is stranded on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. She is all alone except for her brother.
I will not tell the rest because I would like the reader to be pleasantly surprised with the excellent writing style of Scott 0’Dell.
