The complexity of the English language is being deleted. The art of conversation is lost behind a smokescreen of abbreviations the Internet language. Phrases like just kidding, which were once seen as cute phrases that could woo a crowd are now replaced with JK. JK sits flat on the tongue; it is a stale word that sucks the life of any conversation.
Recently in a chat room somebody used the abbreviation ROFL. My first reaction was that of pure confusion. What did ROFL actually mean? Then the abbreviation popped up again, and again followed by jk’s and lol’s. I later figured out that ROFL meant, “rolling on floor laughing.” I was completely lost in this new language. I slept uneasy that night thinking of a world where conversation was nothing but abbreviation. The night passed – the ugliness was behind me.
However, as I walked through the hallways at Leavitt I heard the sputtering of a dying language. Our English language has been filled with slang and abbreviation. Sentences are quickly spit out using words like LOL. It’s amazing that anyone can understand anyone anymore. The times are changing and people are becoming dumber by the second. Unfortunately, in the future, instead being friends, we will be “doggs.” We will acknowledge each other using “wurd.” In the end we will all be LOL.
