DEAR SUN SPOTS: I bought a tanning package at Madison’s Tanning and Day Spa in Lisbon for $70 at the beginning of October. I called several times to make an appointment and only got an answering machine. I left a message each time and finally someone called me back mid-October and said that she was the new owner and the place would be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from then on.

I have called several times since then to make an appointment, and there isn’t even an answering machine to leave a message on and there is a sign out front of the building that says “temporarily closed.” Does Sun Spots know what’s going on? I want my money back, and I am about to call Channel 13 to ask them to televise a scam investigation if I don’t hear from Madison’s Tanning soon. — ANGRY IN LISBON

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am inquiring about Madison’s Tanning and day spa in Lisbon, I have a gift certificate for there, and they are not answering any calls at anytime of day. I would like to spend my gift certificate there, but they seem to be closed, although there Web site is up and running. I was wondering if you could find out when they will be open, and if not what can I do with my $50 gift certificate? — Katie in Poland

ANSWER: Sun Spots was not able to find anything out. Perhaps a reader will be able to help. Unfortunately, these situations appear to be on the rise. The weak economy may be putting a crimp on people’s ability to pamper themselves. Read on for another example.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For my birthday I received a gift certificate to Dragonfly Spa on Center Street in Auburn. I have noticed that they are not open anymore. Can you tell me if they have moved to a new location, or if there is someone I can contact regarding my gift certificate. Thank you. — Rachel, Auburn

ANSWER: There is good news for Dragonfly customers. Thanks to Brian Gagnon, a teacher at Fairview School, Sun Spots found the owner, John, and manager, Barbara. They have made arrangements for gift certificates to be honored at D’Avantis Hair Studio in the Lewiston Mall, at 20 East Ave., 782-0202.

Barbara said that after consulting with their attorney, they are not refunding cash. If you have further questions, you can call her evenings at 650-5851.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What happened to Athen’s Pizza on Sabattus Street in Lewiston? They made the best pizzas in town! I have a gift certificate that I wanted to redeem. Any chance they’ll be back in business soon? If not, what about the gift certificate, will someone honor that? Thanks. — D.D., Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots is at a loss. Their Web site is still up, but the phone number doesn’t work. Does anybody out there know the manager or owner?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am writing to request the address for the silver Christmas trees. I happened to find one while cleaning out my mother’s shed. If they’re still interested, please have them call me at 645-9907. — Brandy Thomas, Wilton

ANSWER: The request for a silver Christmas tree was from a theater group. That play is undoubtedly complete, but some other nonprofit group might be interested in your tree. Thank you for offering.
