LOVELL — The Lovell Historical Society will hold a Christmas open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at the 1839 Kimball-Stanford House. The society’s newest publication, “The Lovell News,”
will be available for sale.
“The Lovell News” was published from November 1935 until April 1938 by three boys from Lovell Village, ages 10 and 12. Their three- to four-page newspapers were published every other week and included general news, weather, sports and gossip.
The newspaper’s popularity exceeded the boys’ expectations. The subscribers were a combination of in-town and out-of-state readers. Both the Boston Transcript and the Portland Sunday Telegram carried front page articles on the publishing achievement of the boys.
Today, “The Lovell News” presents a story of life in Lovell during the 1930s. Often the writing is humorous, but it also highlights important moments in the life of the town.
Included in the re-publication of the issues are more than 60 images culled from the archives of the Lovell Historical Society. The book is hardcover with a dust jacket, about 300 pages and cost $40 each book. The last surviving editor of “The Lovell News,” Timmy Warren, will be on hand to sign copies, weather permitting.
In addition to the book sale and signing, the Kimball-Stanford House will be decorated for the holidays and the museum exhibit will be open, featuring a new display of local artifacts. An assortment of holiday goodies will be offered in the bake shop along with free refreshments to all. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to decorate their own cookies for free.
Those attending will also have the opportunity to win one of four gift certificates in a raffle. Tickets for the raffle are $5 for a book of six or $1 each. The raffle drawing will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday and tickets may be purchased either by calling the Historical Society at 925-3234 or by buying them that day.
